OPEN DIGITAL PEDAGOGY = CRITICAL PEDAGOGY

Written by Jody R. Rosen and Maura A. Smale

I often tell the students that I teach that I am by no means the holder of all knowledge, in fact I often feel I am learning more from them than they are teaching me. I loved that this article started out with this exact same sentiment. It talked about how digital learning platforms can help get away from this teacher being the all knowing power in the front of the room. “Open digital platforms can break these implicit rules to make spaces for joint inquiry among all members of the college community in the spirit of Freirian ideals of critical pedagogy. “ I agree with this completely. When the power comes from all angles and is distributed everyone will gain. Many online college courses are now being offered free to the public, using simple and free online tools. Classes such as the one this course is being modeled after DS106 from Mary Washington University for example are open to anyone and being used by other college professors to make their courses even better. “Students are empowered as learners if encouraged to act as co-creators of the platforms and learning spaces they use for their college work.” Just like in the real world and in business students are now becoming part of the solutions, and part of the process. They learn more and will retain more because they will help be part of the process. “An open system fosters opportunities for flattening hierarchies within a college community and enable students and faculty members to become critical co-investigators.” Many students have already lived and experienced so much in their lives, and if educators tap into this wealth of knowledge the entire class will benefit. “Using open digital tools in the college classroom allows students to bring in their lived experiences and prior knowledge more readily, working against the banking concept of education.”

This article directly relates to our class because it is what our class is being set up as. This class has been set up as an educational ecosystem that helps students teach and learn from each other and provides them access to free and easy tools to present this information on. Blogging, twitter, and hypotheses are all free tools that this class uses in order to help foster education that is distributed. This was a recommended reading article that is very relevant to our class, and I would recommend it as well.
